Bird Flu

        America has found a new favorite infectious disease to worry about. You've probably heard a lot about the dreaded "bird flu" pandemic that many experts are predicting. It seems to be a big concern for a lot of people these days, so I thought I would pen a few strategies that you can use right now to help insure that this latest epidemic won't turn into tragedy for you or your family or friends. Please note that all of the following things work both for preventing and treating the flu. They can also be used to prevent and cure regular run-of-the-mill influenza and the common cold.

1) Doing the Foundational Cleansing and Nourishing Program (You can get your copy of an E-Book by me, detailing the whole program and how to do it, by following this blue link). You can't stay healthy with a dirty body. You cleanse the outside of your body every day, just remember that your insides need washing even more than your "outsides." Disease germs don't feed on you. They are scavengers that consume wastes, dead and diseased tissues, toxins, and excess mucus in your body; so clean those things out and refuse to be a germ buffet. Remember, germs are just like teenagers - if there's no food around, they leave! ;)

2) Avoiding things that damage your immune system, like: refined sugar and anything containing refined sugar in any amount; anything containing any synthetic / artificial ingredients - you have to get picky here, you wouldn't put the wrong kind of gas in your car's tank, so don't put the wrong kind of merchandise into your body. As a colleague of mine says, "If it's not food, don't eat it."

        This includes ALL synthetic chemicals and pharmaceutical drugs, they are not capable of healing you, but they are capable of causing as much liver damage as hepatitis, as much kidney damage as diabetes, as much brain damage as a 110º fever, and as much damage to the immune system as AIDS. So why expose yourself to such deadly toxins? Why not see a holistic practitioner about correcting the root cause of any illnesses and weaning off of those hard drugs?

        Why not take this opportunity to eliminate toxic household chemicals as well. You can use vinegar in the laundry instead of detergent, hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach; a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar instead of window cleaners containing ammonia (which is very toxic); use a mixture of equal parts vinegar and olive oil as wood polish; get your personal toiletries from a health-food store, and anything that is designed to kill anything (e.g., bug spray, rat poison, garden pesticides/insecticides/herbicides - weed killers), take immediately to a toxic waste disposal site (look in your local phone book) and don't look back!

        Stress can be the biggest immune-destroyer of all, so diffuse stress by taking a day off every week to do absolutely nothing, and taking at least an hour out of each day to relax, meditate, pray, etc. (FYI: newspapers, magazines, computers, television, and telephones do not count as relaxing).

3)  Not eating things that feed the germs. In addition to the things mentioned in #2 above, dairy products (i.e., milk and anything made from or containing milk) are the most mucus-forming substances on this planet. Eating any of these things is a loud, glaring, sparkling neon invitation for colds and flus of all types to enter your body and make themselves at home. Vegetable products like soy, almond, or rice milks, cheeses, etc. generally are not mucus-forming and make excellent alternatives to eating glue (dairy).

        Also, eggs, and all meats and animal flesh are very mucus forming, though usually not as bad as the dairy products. Also, anything made from white flour is very mucus forming. All of these things can fill your digestive system, lungs, sinuses, and other body parts with thick sticky mucus and turn you into a smorgasbord for every disease germ within a hundred miles!

        If you don't think you can eliminate these "foods" entirely, keep this in mind: eliminating 25% of these things from your diet can give you 25% protection from infections, eliminating 50% of them can provide 50% protection, and eliminating 100% of them usually provides at lease 98 - 99% protection.

4) Fresh, raw, organic garlic cloves are the best combination of safety and effectiveness for both preventing and curing infections. One of the best ways I know of to take garlic is in a garlic soup.

Garlic Soup Recipe

One quart of vegetable broth or one quart of water with 4 cubes of vegetable bouillon
Ten or more cloves of fresh raw organic garlic (grated or pressed)
Cayenne Pepper to taste

Combine all ingredients and warm in a pan on the stove top (never use a microwave!) and enjoy. Try adding a little more garlic each time you make this soup. And take into account that an extra large clove is worth 2. It won't hurt you to get too much, but it may seem a bit intense if you overdo it the first time.

5) Citricidal grapefruit seed extract can be found at most health food stores. 2-5 drops in a glass of water 2-3 times a day will knock out most infections in a few days or less. For prevention, I would take 3 drops in a glass of water once a day, every day. This comes very concentrated so it should ALWAYS be diluted before using.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has tested citricidal and found that it safely and effectively destroys the bird flu virus.

6) Sambucol Elderberry extract inactivates viruses by surrounding them with the equivalent of foam rubber, preventing them from doing any damage while your immune system comes along to destroy them.

7) Sauerkraut  ABC news recently reported on a Japanese researcher who is using this condiment to cure chickens who have the avian flu; so why not add some of this food to your diet, it's good for you anyway as it supports the digestive and immune systems and helps replenish your "friendly flora," the beneficial bacteria in your gut that you can't live without. 

8) Herbal Cold Tea I love to use a tea (herbal infusion) of equal parts oregano, basil, thyme, peppermint, and ginger, and if you want an extra kick, just add a shake or two of cayenne pepper. I've seen this cure colds in under 3 hours when they're caught early. 9) Anti-plague tonics There are two that I recommend. The first one, called "Anti-Plague Syrup," you can get from the herb shop. The other, called "Super Tonic," you can make at home (you can make the Anti-Plague syrup too, but it's very time consuming).

Here's the recipe for the Super-Tonic:

One handful each of Fresh Raw Organic Garlic cloves (peeled), hot white onions, ginger root (rhizome), horseradish root, and hot peppers (the hotter the better). Put these all into your blender and add enough raw, organic apple cider vinegar to come about half way up the blender, blend and if necessary add more vinegar to thin it out a bit. You can eat this like apple sauce, mix some into your morning smoothie, use it as salad dressing, or however you prefer, take a little every day for prevention, or half a cup a day (or more) for a cure.

I've also seen a product for sale in some health food stores called "Cyclone Cider" that is very similar to the Super-Tonic.

10) Things that strengthen your immune system:

Echinacea, astragalus, calendula, all superfoods (concentrated herbal foods).

Vigorous exercise, deep breathing, deep relaxation.

Looking into the mirror and saying "I love you!" 50 times, 3 times a day, Get rid of everything in your house and anywhere on your property that falls under the heading of "useless junk" or "bad memories" no matter what it is - these two steps alone are probably the most powerful of all the suggestions on this list!

11) It should go without saying that you should definitely be practicing basic principles of sanitation: Washing hands 6 or more times a day (especially after using the bathroom) then rum a few drops of olive oil into them to keep them from drying out and cracking, bathing or showering daily, keeping finger and toe nails short - or at least very clean, keeping a reasonably clean living environment, etc. But don't use toxic things like chlorine bleach, other cleaning chemicals and most antibacterial soaps as they will do your immune system more harm than good and may actually increase the probability of an infection. There are plenty of safe natural disinfectants like Citricidal grapefruit seed extract, and many different essential oils that can be used instead (inquire at your local health food store).

        You can make an excellent, non-toxic hand sanitizer (especially handy where water is in scarce supply) by combining one part of the above mentioned Citricidal grapefruit seed extract with ten parts of vegetable glycerin, mix well, and put it into a little one ounce or half-ounce glass dropper bottle that you can get at most health food stores. This is a great convenient way to sterilize your hands by simply rubbing a few drops into them just like you would a moisturizing lotion. You can also use this to sterilize any surface that you need to sterilize like eating utensils, first-aid supplies, etc. For surfaces, the Citricidal can be mixed 10-20 drops in a quart of water and sprayed with a regular spray bottle (be sure that the bottle hasn't housed any toxic chemicals before). 

12) Disinfect the air in your home and your place of business. There are several great ways to do this without poisoning yourself with toxic chemicals. My favorite methods are spraying essential oils in the air and burning incense.

Essential oils:

         Combine lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit essential oils in an essential oil sprayer bottle and spray around the entire house aiming high into the air and away from objects as much as possible or work space or put the oils into an essential oil diffuser (available at health food stores or online). You can also experiment with your favorite oils. Eucalyptus and peppermint are particularly good if you've already caught something, especially if there's a lot of congestion or nasal/sinus problems.

          Use only pure natural essential oils, absolutely no synthetics. Synthetic scent oils are potentially toxic and have no medicinal benefits whatsoever. They may smell like real essential oils, but they are a completely different substance!

Incense:

           There are many good incenses for disinfecting the air. My favorite is sage brush, also called wild sage or desert sage. I suggest opening a window or getting some other form of ventilation when you do this. Also, just to be on the safe side, if you're pregnant or have weak lungs and have not done this before, now is probably not the best time to start, but you can still use the essential oil sprays and diffusers.

           To burn: Select a small container that you don't mind getting a little dirty like a sea shell or small bowl, crumble some dried sage brush into it (you can also use culinary sage or garden sage if you can't get any sage brush), arrange it into a pile and light it like a candle, let it burn for a few seconds and blow out the flame, letting it smolder. Wave the smoke all around the room. do this for every room in your house, especially the bathrooms, kitchen, and wherever people gather. It is a wonderful air disinfectant and has been used for centuries to keep infections from spreading.

           You can also use something called a smudge stick (check at your local health food store or any place that sells Native American products). Light the fat end, blow it out and let it smolder and smoke as with the method above. Hold it over a bowl or something similar to prevent the burning embers from falling on your carpet. When you're ready to put the stick out, do it cigarette-style, by pushing the burning end into a bowl of fine sand about an inch thick. And do remember that any incense involves a little bit of fire, so exercise caution like you would for a candle or anything else.
